Following Lewes’ departure at the end of March to pastures new, life has been a bit hectic, to say the least. We have had three record months and I have been trying to catch up on all the work, to no avail. In addition to working flat out in the consulting room, I have been looking for a new optometrist and a new manager.
Fortunately my search for both is now over. At the beginning of December we will be joined by our new optometrist - Naomi Maunder. She is currently working at an independent practice in Radstock, but fancied a change of scenery. Naomi was sponsored through university by her grandmother who suffered with glaucoma, and she is passionate about supporting clients with Low Vision, contact lenses and glaucoma. She qualified last October having gained a First Degree at Cardiff University and spent her Pre- Registration, or in-practice training year at the Oxford Eye Hospital. She will be working four days a week and one Saturday morning every month. On Wednesdays she runs a children’s club for her local Church and when she has time she enjoys running, walking, photography, travel and experimenting in the kitchen. Naomi is married and lives this side of Bath. I am very much looking forward to working with her.
As many of you know, Mary has been threatening to retire for a long time. Despite still having more energy than the rest of us put together, she would like to spend more time with her family in Spain. We have not decided on a departure date yet, but it will be this side of Christmas (probably!). Mary is impossible to replace, but I have been looking for someone with extensive management experience in an optical practice environment, with the confidence and ability to step in to Mary’s shoes.
Rebecca contacted me having seen an advert that I placed on our website. She worked for 25 years in Dunscombes Opticians near Bath, finishing as store manager. She left after the practice was bought by Vision Express and she became despondent with their business model, and she is currently managing the French Linen Company Outlet Store in Kilver Court. Rebecca has a wonderfully bubbly personality coupled with extensive optical and managerial experience and we are looking forward to her joining us in the middle of September. Mary will retire when she is confident that Rebecca has her feet firmly under the table and a firm grasp of the reins (which I suspect means keeping me under control as well!).
